Early Day Motions

Early day motions (EDMs) are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. However, very few EDMs are actually debated. Instead, they are used for reasons such as publicising the views of individual MPs, drawing attention to specific events or campaigns, and demonstrating the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view.

Although there is very little prospect of EDMs being debated, many attract a great deal of public interest and frequently receive media coverage. The Haemophilia Society use them build up the support for our campaigns with MPs.

The Haemophilia Society is currently urging MPs to sign EMD 861 'Archer Report and Haemophilia'. This was tabled by Alan Meale MP and states:

That this House is aware that during the 1970s and 1980s NHS services infected more than 5,000 people with bleeding disorders and more than 1,200 others and their partners who were infected with HIV from which some died; cannot understand why successive administrations have refused to hold a public inquiry into these tragic events or provide full financial settlements to those involved at a level equivalent to that awarded to sufferers in the Republic of Ireland; and calls on the Government to give full legal effect to the recommendations of the Archer report so that justice may finally be granted to those involved.

Please ask your local MP to sign this motion.
